My practice is based in the village of Fortrose on the Black Isle, near Inverness (20mins drive from the Kessock Bridge).
What type of massage do I do?
I am trained in a number of massage techniques; principally therapeutic massage and remedial massage. I often combine a number of techniques within one treatment depending on the client’s individual needs.
Therapeutic massage (also known as Holistic massage) is based mainly on Swedish massage techniques. This type of massage can be very effective for countering stress, anxiety and insomnia. Therapeutic massage can also aid the functioning of many of the systems of the body eg the immune, lymphatic, circulatory, digestive and respiratory systems.
Remedial and deep tissue massage techniques are particularly effective for dealing with specific pain conditions eg back pain, sciatica, shoulder and neck pain, headaches, arm and leg pain etc. I often use a remedial technique called trigger point therapy; an effective and proven method for relieving soft tissue pain. Trigger points are areas of contracted muscle which, if released through massage, can relieve localised pain or recognised patterns of pain referral.
Of course you do not need to have any particular complaints before coming for a massage. Massage is a wonderful way of boosting overall physical and emotional wellbeing.
Clients come to see me for many and varied reasons and I tailor each session to the needs of the particular client. I also vary the pressure used; each body responds to a different pressure, some people requiring a lighter touch, others a firmer approach.
Depending on the needs of the client, a treatment may consist of a full or part-body massage, focussing on particular targeted areas if necessary.
What happens during a session?
First of all we will have a short consultation to explore your reasons for coming for massage and to look at any particular conditions you may be suffering from. This helps me to develop a “picture” of your body and to shape the treatment to your particular needs. All information is held in the strictest confidence.
This is followed by the massage itself. Your privacy will be protected at all times – you will be covered by towels and only the area being massaged will be exposed.
Afterwards there will be an opportunity for us both to give feedback about the session.
Sometimes a series of treatments is most helpful to address a particular area of pain or more deeply held tension. Sometimes, a single session is all that is needed. Often people like to come for maintenance sessions (on average every 2-8 weeks) to alleviate the build up of muscle tension, repetitive strain or stress. I can advise you, but of course the frequency and timing of treatments is ultimately your choice.
